Pinhole Surgical Technique

A close up model of a mouth with cavities between the tooth at Mid Valley Dental, in Menasha, WIYour gums are an important part of your mouth. They provide protection for the roots of your teeth as well as help to provide stability. The gums also play an aesthetic role in your smile. When your gums recede, both your oral health and your smile suffer. Fortunately, gum recession can be reversed. It used to be that this was done using a gum graft. Today, Mid Valley Dental can restore your oral health and your smile with the pinhole surgical technique.

What Causes Gum Recession?

There are some different causes of gum recession. Common causes include:
•  Gum, or periodontal, disease.
•  Brushing your teeth too hard.
•  Having crooked teeth.
•  Bruxism, or the grinding and clenching of your teeth.
•  Using tobacco products.
•  Tongue or lip piercings.
•  Aging.
•  Genetics.

Effects of Gum Recession

As your gums recede, several issues begin to arise:
•  Your teeth begin to appear longer, which affects the quality of your smile.
•  More surface area of your teeth is exposed, which leaves you more vulnerable to tooth decay and cavities.
•  Small spaces begin to appear between your teeth.
•  Your teeth become sensitive as their roots are exposed.
•  Your teeth can begin to shift out of alignment as they lose some of their support.

Pinhole Surgical Technique

The pinhole surgical technique is an alternative to traditional gum grafting. This procedure is minimally invasive and a good option for many patients suffering gum recession. Treatment begins with a small hole being made in your gums. We use a small pin-like tool with a head approximately the size of a ballpoint pen to do this. This hole is the access point at which your procedure is performed. Small, specialized tools are used to loosen the gum tissue and rearrange it over the teeth to provide proper coverage. Next, small strips of collagen are inserted into the gums through the access hole. The collagen strips function to hold your gums in place. Results of pinhole gum surgery are visible immediately.

Before undergoing pinhole gum surgery, a thorough consultation is necessary. While the procedure can be beneficial for many patients, there are some situations in which it may not be recommended. If you have advanced gum disease or have suffered a significant amount of gum recession, you may not be a candidate. Your oral health will need to be stabilized before you can undergo treatment.

The Benefits of Pinhole Surgery

Pinhole surgery has many benefits:
•  You do not have any surgical wounds, and no blades are used.
•  Many teeth can be treated in a single appointment.
•  The procedure takes significantly less time than with traditional gum grafting.
•  You do not require and sutures following your treatment.
•  Pain and swelling after treatment are minimal. There is also very minimal bleeding.
•  There is very little recovery time. Where it can take 2 to 3 weeks to recover from gum grafting, it only takes about 24 hours for the pinhole in your gums to close up and heal.
•  Results are visible immediately.

The pinhole surgical technique is a way to reverse gum recession, restoring your oral health and the quality of your smile, in a much less invasive manner than with traditional gum grafting.
