If a person notices bleeding gums while brushing their teeth or even flossing this can be a sign that it is time to see your dentist. When bleeding gums occur, it can be a sign of underlining issues that will need to be resolved so that disease does not form. If you have seen any bleeding in your gums, it is best to get an appointment scheduled with your dentist as soon as possible.
Bleeding gums do not mean that a person has a potential disease in their mouth or that it can be a serious issue. There are other things that can cause bleeding gums aside from disease. Some causes that are not of a serious concern when bleeding gums occur are tartar built up in the mouth, plaque or even brushing your teeth too hard can cause this. There are ways to stop the bleeding before you come into our office.
Ensure Your Mouth is Kept Clean
It is important to always keep your mouth clean and practice good oral hygiene. This is the number one step to preventative care to ensure that you do not have issues with your gums bleeding. If you are not taking care of your oral hygiene, this is when we start to see ideal conditions for buildup and disease to start to take over. The recommendation to ensure that you are maintaining a good level of oral hygiene is to brush and floss twice a day which our dentist will recommend when you come in for your visit.
Ice Helps to Stop Bleeding
Just like when we cut our hands or bump our knees, our moms would always use ice to help stop the bleeding. In the case of bleeding gums, this is exactly the same practice that should be used. It also helps relieve any pain while you have the ice on the place where the gum is currently bleeding.
Saltwater Will Help Stop Bleeding
Using salt mixed with water to rinse out your mouth will help to remove any growth of bacteria while also helping with the healing of the gums. Mixing half of a teaspoon of salt with 8 ounces of water will be the ideal mixture to rinse your mouth out. However, it is important that you schedule an appointment with us to ensure that there are no underlining issues to be concerned about regarding your bleeding gums.
