Bad Breath is Your Mouth Trying to Show You It Has a Problem

Posted on 9/6/2021 by Dr. Michael Wockenfus
Bad Breath is Your Mouth Trying to Show You It Has a ProblemFrom time to time but we all have stinky breath. Bad breath is usually apparent in the morning, but it can persist throughout the day. Bacteria and decayed food particles in your mouth hang around your teeth and tongue. They produce a sulfur compound which emits an unpleasant odor. By brushing, flossing, and rinsing your teeth and mouth you are limiting the source of the stink.

What if your bad breath or bad taste in your mouth continues to linger even after you have brushed your teeth? It could be that the bad breath in your mouth is trying to show you that you have a problem. Persistent bad breath may be a warning sign.

What Could Bad Breath Indicate?

If you have bad breath that doesn't go away it could be a warning sign of gum disease. Since gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on your teeth, bad breath is one of the first signs of gum disease.

Bad breath may indicate other dental problems as well. For instance, bad breath is also the first step in tooth decay and yeast infections in the mouth. Bad breath could also indicate that dental appliances in your mouth are not fitting well because bacteria are growing out of control and starting to stink in your mouth.

Interestingly, if your tongue is dry, you may be more prone to a smelly mouth. When you eat, saliva flushes away bacteria and food particles. The bacteria which was once on your teeth, tongue, and gums remains indefinitely until it is brushed or washed away. Bad breath may be a sign of a dry mouth.
