Some People Really Can Keep Their Wisdom Teeth!

Some People Really Can Keep Their Wisdom Teeth! Most people assume that once their wisdom teeth are fully developed and grown into place, they will have to be removed by our staff. However, not everyone has to have their wisdom teeth removed. While there is often a pain in the upper or lower jaw while they grow in, they might benefit you if they do not shift around any of your teeth or hurt when the eruption process is complete.

Why Would I Need My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

When your wisdom teeth grow in (or if they ever grow in), they may fit perfectly in your mouth. In these situations, our team will not recommend tooth extraction surgery for this. The reason wisdom teeth are commonly removed is that they cannot fit fully into the space in your mouth. If your mouth is just too small or your adjacent teeth take up most of the space in your mouth already, wisdom teeth can grow in obstructed. Some may grow at an angle, while others may not fully grow in at all. This can cause excessive pain and will require surgery to fully remove them.

If your wisdom teeth grew in perfectly fine, they might still need to be removed in the future. Since wisdom teeth are so far in the back of your mouth, they can be difficult to clean properly. This requires extensive brushing or flossing to ensure they stay in optimal health. If you neglect them, you may develop large cavities. If this happens, we may just recommend having them fully removed instead of removing the decaying parts of them.

If a wisdom tooth is too impacted, it should be removed as soon as possible. They can impact your soft tissue and bone, which makes you more susceptible to diseases and other oral health problems. In more extreme cases, you can develop cysts or tumors around the wisdom teeth, furthering complications. If you are unsure whether you should keep your wisdom teeth, contact our office today for a dental exam.
