How to Manage Having a Stained Veneer

Posted on 3/15/2020 by Dr. Michael Wockenfus
How to Manage Having a Stained VeneerDental Veneers are devices that can make your teeth look perfect. Besides cosmetics, it's possible to get veneers if you have suffered dental trauma.

Though veneers are resilient like our teeth, they are much more porous. Because they are more porous, it's common for dental veneers to become stained. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to correct stained veneers.

Veneers are typically made of a composite material or porcelain. These materials don't take well to the whitening techniques used on teeth. Over-the-counter whitening products, unfortunately, can't whiten your veneers. However, we can use other methods to make your veneers look like new. We can whiten veneers with a dental cleaning. During your cleaning, we can use a polishing paste to take away surface stains. However, a dental cleaning may not work depending on the severity of your stains. Heavily stained veneers may need replacement.

How to Avoid Staining

If you've recently gotten veneers, you may be wondering how to avoid staining altogether. There are a few simple steps you can take to ensure your veneers last for several years before they become stained. First, you will need to watch what you eat and drink. Darkly colored fruit and drinks will stain your veneers very fast. Avoid fruits like pomegranates and drinks like coffee.

Second, you will need to take extra care of your veneers. Brushing your teeth is always important, but with veneers, it's more so. Brushing regularly can even get rid of minor surface stains. Lastly, get in the habit of rinsing your mouth after you eat. After eating, try to swish water in your mouth to remove any potential staining foods or liquids.

If you use these methods, your veneers should last for quite a while. However, we can help you if your veneers are stained. Please call us to set up an appointment. While you're here, we'll give you the best course of action to make your smile look new.
